Biology, Culture and the Emergence and Elaboration of Symbolization

چکیده
Introduction The human language capacity presents biological and cognitive sciences with a striking paradox, since this capacity is unique, even though its biological, cultural and communicative foundations are in large measure shared with non-human species. It is widely known that humans share around 95% of their genetic material with their closest primate relatives, chimpanzees. We also know, since the publication of the initial results of the human genome project, that the linguistic gulf separating the human species from other closely related species is not correlated with a difference of any substantial order of magnitude in the available quantity of genetic material for directly coding the language capacity. This does not falsify claims for such a direct coding, but should at least give pause for thought.

The Epigenesis of Symbolization
This paper outlines the epigenetic logic of the emergence and elaboration of symbolization. The account is based upon considerations arising from the study of the ontogenesis and phylogenesis of symbolic communication, abstraction from which yields generalizations regarding the necessary developmental pre-requisites for the capacity for symbolization and the processes of the elaboration of symb...
متن کاملThe Effect of Using Visual Aids, Semantic Elaboration, and Visual Aids plus Semantic Elaboration on Iranian Learners' Vocabulary Learning
This study investigated the effect of using visual aids, semantic elaboration, and visual aids plus semantic elaboration on the Iranian EFL learners' vocabulary learning. To conduct the study, the researchers assigned 49 elementary learners to three homogeneous groups according to their proficiency level. Then, a pre-test of Paribakht and Wesche's Vocabulary Knowledge Scale was given to each gr...
متن کاملIn vitro elaboration Mutagenesis and cloning of the PA gene in Bacillus subtilis
Background: The immune antigen of Bacillus anthracis is a protein that can attach to the surface receptor of all human cells. At the surface of cancer cells, there is a receptor that activates the uPA (Urokinase plasminogen) that do not exist in normal human cells. Objectives: The aim of this study was changing the location of the attachment of the PA gene by a dir...

متن کاملIn vitro callus induction and isolation of volatile compounds in callus culture of Lallemantia iberica (M. Bieb.) Fisch. & C. A. Mey.
A modern biotechnological technique to obtain useful natural products from plants is to isolate them from their callus cultures. Lallemantia iberica is an annual herb of the Lamiaceae family known for its stimulant, diuretic, and expectorant effects in Iranian folk medicine. The present study investigated the induction of plant callus tissue and identification of its volatile compounds. For thi...
